Thanks for visiting our brand spanking new website. This is a work in progress, an experiment without a version number. Things will change and evolve over time once we figure out what we want to do with this thing. One thing’s for sure—calling this a beta would be just lazy. We don’t wanna be like that, do we? "
As with many other natural phenomena, the skills of designers follow a bell curve. There are always a few super productive ones, lots of in-between, and then some at the tail of the curve. Factors that determine the productivity and quality of design work include training, experience, or simply - if I dare to say aloud - talent.

This week was mostly about workshopping, creating personas and transforming things.
A startup we helped back in the day with service strategy & concepting, @netcycler, opened this week. Their service helps you recycle your old stuff through a magical match-making-algorithm. The service will no doubt evolve a lot over time, but you can already use it fully at http://netcycler.fi. Congrats for them for going live. In [...]
This weeknote is about new space, people and webdesign websites.
This week we made quite important contracts. We finally signed the papers for our brand new office space. 300+ square meters of dedicated team rooms, huge meeting room and so much space we don’t know what to do with it, yet. Well actually, the girls of Lillehammer probably have a plan for everything already, as [...]
Another Sunday weeknote is about data and more people
Forum Virium hosted their fourth annual seminar, called Open Up The City, this week. This very nicely organized seminar was all about opening up the data, especially data from the depths of municipalities of Helsinki. One of the headliners was Dr Rufus Pollock, the Co-Founder of Open Knowledge Foundation and of University of Cambridge. His [...]
As promised a while ago, we thought it would be useful to share the more long term thinking and work that goes into running and developing a design consultancy. In this series myself and other founding partners will be reflecting the past two and a half years, things we've learned and also about the future we all are quite excited about. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do.
At the moment of writing, we’ve been working on Nordkapp for exactly 950 days now, plus a few months of planning and preparations. Roughly a thousand days. Something that I am quite proud of is that apart from the daily craft of design, we’ve seen one massive economic downturn and still managed to actually keep [...]
How should the teams for design be built? There are thousands of handbooks how to build effective teams, so let’s not get into the generics. There’s one specific aspect of design teamwork that I would like to emphasize, and that is the collaboration of interaction design and visual design.
(See my earlier posts for introduction to the series.) I may have mentioned before, that in a process where interaction designer creates wireframes and then hands them over to a visual designer for decoration, the result often is — decorated boxes. Creating something more, something that is novel, meaningful, effective, fluid, dynamic, alive, and mesmerizing, [...]
Short weeknote this time around.
I’m back from the holidays to a fast week. We are learning new right and wrong challenging ways of doing things from various requirements our projects are bringing us. An example of a challenge is to organize management structure so that decision making takes 3 days and the work must be done in 2. I’m [...]
Forum Virium held a nice event this morning. It was about service design for urban media and embedded design, especially in relation to the recent selection of Helsinki as the World Design Capital 2012. I presented about urban screens. My presentation is attached here with English notes.
